Getting a Tattoo in Cartagena Before the Beach: What to Know

Color scarlet macaw parrot forearm tattoo with tropical leaves, done in Cartagena

Cartagena is a city for walking, eating and spending long days by the sea, so it is natural to ask whether a tattoo fits into your trip. It does, as long as you plan the order. A fresh tattoo is an open wound, and sun, salt water, sand and pool chemicals can irritate it, cause infection or fade the ink.

This guide explains how long to wait, what to avoid and how to organize your days so you can enjoy the Caribbean and still leave with a tattoo that heals well. It is written by the team at Ink Lovers Tattoo Studio, in the Walled City of Cartagena, Colombia.

Quick answer

Wait until your tattoo has fully healed, usually two to four weeks, before swimming or sunbathing. Your artist will tell you what to expect for your piece.

Why timing matters for a fresh tattoo

In the first days, the skin is repairing itself. Anything that dries, rubs or exposes the area to bacteria slows healing. Sweat, sand and the heat of Cartagena all make the skin more reactive. A tattoo that heals well looks sharper and keeps its color longer, which is why the order of your plans matters.

How long to stay away from the beach and the pool

Plan on two to four weeks without swimming, soaking or lying in the sun, or until your artist confirms the tattoo has healed. Larger pieces and areas that bend or rub, like the inside of the elbow, can take longer. Pools add chemicals and the sea adds salt and bacteria, so both are best avoided.

Sun, salt water and sand: what can go wrong

Direct sun can burn a fresh tattoo and fade the pigment, salt water can sting and dry the skin, and sand is full of particles that can irritate it. If you cannot avoid the beach, cover the tattoo with loose clothing, stay in the shade and keep it away from the water. Do not put sunscreen on open skin; use it once the tattoo has healed.

Tattoo first or last? Planning your trip

If you have a week or more, get your tattoo in the first days and spend the rest of the trip away from the water, with city walks, museums and shaded lunches. On a short stay, a small piece done early is usually easier to manage than one on your last day, because you can ask us questions while you are still in town. Large pieces are better planned in advance so nothing is rushed.

What to do if you already got sunburned

Stay out of the sun, keep the area clean and avoid scratching or peeling the skin. Do not apply strong creams unless your artist suggests one. If the skin looks very red, swollen or hot, or you notice pus, see a doctor. You can also message us on WhatsApp and we will tell you what to expect.
