Black and Gray Tattoos in Cartagena

Black and gray tattooing builds images with soft gradients, deep contrast and no color, which makes it a timeless choice for portraits, animals, religious scenes and sleeves. At our studio in Cartagena, Colombia, Lucas Ink focuses on realistic black and gray and large custom pieces, with smooth shading and a clean finish.

Why black and gray still works

Because the image is built from light and shadow, black and gray stays readable for years when it is done with care. It suits detailed subjects like a lion, a family portrait or a symbolic composition, and it can be scaled from a forearm piece to a full back. The artist plans where the darkest areas and the lightest highlights go, so the tattoo keeps its depth even as the skin changes.

How we plan your design

Everything starts with your reference photos and the placement you have in mind. Lucas reviews the size and the amount of detail, suggests how the image should flow with the shape of your arm, leg or back, and tells you how many sessions to expect. If you are visiting, we plan the work around your dates so you arrive with an approved design and enough days to finish properly.

Healing black and gray in a hot climate

Fresh shading needs gentle care. In Cartagena's heat and humidity, keep the tattoo clean, let it breathe, avoid direct sun, pools and salt water until it has healed, and never pick scabs. Once healed, sunscreen protects the contrast. We give you written aftercare in English or Spanish and you can message us on WhatsApp if you have questions during your trip.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

How much does a black and gray tattoo cost?

Prices start from USD 50 for small pieces. Portraits, sleeves and other detailed black and gray work are quoted after we review your references, size and placement, so you know the price before the session. Large pieces are priced for the whole project.

How many sessions does a black and gray sleeve need?

It depends on the size and the detail. A small piece can be finished in one session, while a sleeve or back piece is usually planned in several sessions. Tell us how long you will be in Cartagena and Lucas will suggest a realistic plan.

Can you tattoo a portrait from a photo?

Yes. Send a clear, well-lit photo and, if you like, the placement. We review the likeness, size and detail before booking, because realistic portraits need enough space for the shading to work. We can suggest adjustments so the result matches what you imagine.

Do you offer black and gray tattoos without an appointment?

Smaller black and gray tattoos can sometimes be done the same day, depending on who is available. We are open Monday to Saturday from 10:00 to 19:00. For sleeves, portraits and large work we strongly recommend booking before your trip.
